The confessional is the cine-qua-non of reality television, that which pushes it past mere surveillance. Here we have something of a synthesis of the Athenian chorus and the psychodrama of the Christian soul: the public confessional, a side room to the action that deepens our relationship to it and on occasion sidesteps into center stage.

It’s no surprise how often we take to social media as our confessional - how much of social media depends on the inherent conflict between those for whom social media is a confessional and those for whom it is a spotlight.
